Etching is a timeless and varied process producing rich and textured prints with fine detail. A medium with endless possibilities, this one day workshop is open to beginners and experienced printmakers alike. Covering the entire process from preparing a plate, through to etching, biting and printing.
Drawing inspiration from seasonal Cornish flowers, observing colours, textures and patterns, you will be guided through the drawing and etching processes creating your own delicate floral etching.
The morning will begin with drawing warm ups, sketching the beautiful local flowers supplied by TEG flowers and settling into the studio, in turns you will be shown how to prepare and coat an aluminium plate ready for etching.
Once your plate is ready, you will be guided into the etching process, scratching away the surface to reveal the beautiful bare plate underneath, creating a textured image of the flower arrangement of your choice.
With a break for lunch, Kiwi's experienced printmakers will bite your etching plate using Copper Sulphate - Copper Sulphate is a safer alternative to the traditional nitric acid, although still being an irritant, we find copper sulphate works best in our studio environment.
Your plates will then have the ground removed, ready for the fun part- Printing!
You will spend the afternoon inking and printing your aluminium plate onto a selection of papers, creating a small edition to take home and frame, use as cards or give as gifts to friends and loved ones.
What if I can't draw?
Don't worry if drawing isn't your forte, we believe something special happens when you pull your plate through the press to reveal your print underneath.
The Kiwi team will be at hand to help you with any troubles you may face along the way to creating something to be proud to hang on your wall.
