Print & Art Club

Kiwi are starting an art club for adults, centred around a series of make and take workshops. This 6 week art club will cover a wide range of experimental printing, sewing and art techniques for you to play with and explore. A fun and informal class, where no previous art or print skills are required, perfect for meeting new like minded people and sharing skills. We will cover simple aspects of screen printing with both paper and fabric, dry point etching and lino printing. Participants will create their own bespoke handmade pieces in a friendly and inspiring environment, taking away skills and techniques that can be developed further at home. Perfect to learn new skills without the pressure of a formal class, we aim to have fun, get creative and most importantly eat lots of tea and cake.

Week 1: Make your own set of cards

There is nothing better then getting stuck into a course getting crafty and designing. We will show you how to design and print your own set of cards using screen printing with the added touches of letter printing and collaging. Your cards set can be any theme you wish, such as, greeting, note, thank you, birthday or plain cards for all occasions. To conclude your card set you will be able to gift wrap your cards in colourful spring twine ready to take home and send out with pride to family and friends.

Things to bring and prepare: Have an idea of a design, keep it simple as you will be screen printing from a hand cut stencil. This can be drawings, patterns, text etc. You can bring along additional papers or fabrics

Week 2 & 3: Create your own set of Lino Stamps

Using hand cut pieces of soft lino, we will show you how to create a set of handmade stamps. You will learn how to use a range of linocutting tools, to create unique shapes and patterns. Your hand made stamps will then be used for printing in a range of colours onto wrapping papers, fabrics and gift tags. After the two weeks you will have a set of stamps and papers to take home and use for future craft projects.

Things to bring and prepare: design ideas for stamps, nothing too complex as you will have to carve it out of the lino

Week 4 & 5: Design, print and sew a tool wrap

Play with pattern and design to create your own unique fabric panel and make into a tool wrap. You will create a hand drawn repeat pattern onto stencil paper, hand cut your design  into a stencil, screen print onto fabric. Professional seamstress Liz Harvey will join us at the studio to teach you how to transform your hand printed panel into tool wrap. Perfect to store your stationary, sewing, or painting tools.

Things to bring and prepare: Visual inspiration for a pattern. A pair of fabric scissors. Fabric to line your pencil case. Details of fabric and size will be confirmed in week 4 before the sewing class commences in week 5. Please note sewing machines will be provided.

Week 6: Create a drypoint of a place you love

Dry point is a versatile printmaking process which involves etching an image into a plate ready for printing. Using etching tools you will indent the surface of a sheet of plastic  creating a beautiful and unique textured image to print multiple editions. This technique is perfect for getting lovely atmospheric images with the application of ink, helping you loosen up and enjoy all dry point has to offer.

Create a Drypoint of a place you love. This could be your back garden, the local beach, your favourite buildings in the village or your favourite place in nature. Bring to class some inspiration to help you translate your idea to a printing plate. Learn how to ink and print your plate to create your very own small edition of prints onto beautiful papers to take home. To add a splash of colour to your prints we will show you how to add water colour techniques to your prints.

Things to bring and prepare: A series of photographs and drawings to be translated into a drypoint. If you have any small paint brushes and water colours please bring these along to class to learn how to add colour to your Drypoint's.

Level: There is no experience required to join this course just open to learning, exploring and creating something unique hand made work you can take home. Over 18's only.
